This Saturday evening’s Menangle harness racing meeting will host the $25,000 Semi Finals for the rich 2yo Breeders Challenge Series, in which locally owned filly Modern Dancer will feature.

Owned by the Allport family, and trained by David Hewitt, the filly won her way into the semi final by taking out a heat of the series held at Bathurst last month. On that occasion she started favourite and accounted for a nice field.

On Saturday night, Modern Dancer who is by renowned sire Modern Art has drawn ideally in barrier 1, and whilst having to compete against the boom Riverina filly Frith from the Bernie Kelly stable, she should acquit herself very well. Blessed with good gate speed, Modern Dancer is likely to find a spot close to the lead during the run.

The Dennis Picker trained and driven Sneaky Catch took out the final of $6,000 ACT PA Hire Pace at the Canberra paceway last month. Settling to the rear of the field, Sneaky Catch came with a withering run to score in a fast 2:00.7 mile rate. Second in the event was the David Hewitt trained Bella Paloma.

David Hewitt’s good run continued at last Monday’s Canberra meeting when the stable scored a winning double with the 3yo filly Hifire Sea in the opening event. The filly was taken to the lead early in the race where she then led throughout to score from Mister Ebby for Dennis Day.

Hewitt’s second win on the 6 race card came in the last of the night when the Allport family owned Innocent Art was a first up winner. A 4yo Modern Art mare she settled behind the leader and race favourite Artesian Lover until gaining a split on entering the home straight. The mare then raced away to an easy and impressive win.
