Neville to contest Griffith’s elections despite sex trial

GRIFFITH Mayor Mike Neville has shrugged off a pending sexual assault trial and announced he will again run for Griffith’s top job at next month’s local election.

If elected, Cr Neville will be forced to again stand down from his role a month after the September 8 poll and, if convicted, force a costly by-election.

He said the matter would “ultimately be resolved” in October and remained confident he would be cleared of all charges.

Cr Neville will also be nominating for a role on council as one of the 11 elected councillors.

In making the announcement, Cr Neville said he believed much had been achieved for the community over the past four years under his leadership and he was eager to see this work continue.

“Griffith has been widely recognised for the strong leadership and stance that it took on the Murray Darling Basin Plan and the key stakeholder group is viewed as playing a key role in amendments to the Basin Plan,” Cr Neville said.

“The funding Griffith Council has received for the construction of the Griffith Community Private Hospital is a significant investment in the future of this community.

“Work has commenced on the upgrade of the Griffith Airport, our City Park is probably one of the most used facilities within the community and there have been major improvements in transport and logistics and the completion of a new Water Reclamation Plant.”
