The Holbrook Tennis Club will be represented in the Hume Tennis Association Grand Finals this coming Saturday by the Sect 3 team who defeated Bungowannah Possums in the Preliminary Final at Walla last Saturday.
The Holbrook team got away to a good start and maintained a small lead throughout the Men’s and Ladies sets to be nine games up with the mixed sets to play.
The defining moment was one of the last ladies set with Laura Parker and Sharon Waite winning 6/1 to give the Brooker’s a definite edge.
The first mixed set went Bungo’s way 6/0 to bring the interest back into the three remaining sets on court with Willy Papworth and Sharon winning 6/4 , then Sam Joyce in good form with Judy Smith also winning 6/4 to seal the win with the final result being Holbrook 80 games to Bungo’ Possums 69 games.
The team now play Burrumbuttock who defeated Culcairn in the other final.
The Sect 4 team played Bungowannah Roo’s at the St Pauls courts and were on the back foot from the start as the Bungo ladies dominated proceedings to set up a good lead through the match.
The Holbrook young ones certainly played well but the experienced opposition ladies held the advantage with Bungo 14 up going into the mixed. The match was pretty well decided with the first couple of mixed sets being evenly split to leave Bungo with a good lead with two sets on which they won to run out winners 81 to 61 games. The younger members of the team Emma and Alyce Parker and Harry Dowling and Christopher Papworth played well over the last couple of weeks to have themselves ready for promotion up the grades next season.
Thanks to reserves Gary and Liz for being on hand if required and we wish the Sect 3 team best of luck for the GF this coming Saturday.
