Bike enthusiasts invade Dungog

Dungog Showground was home to thousands of bike enthusiasts on the weekend for the annual Thunderbolt Rally.

There was a large police presence from Friday afternoon as people started arriving at the showground, but Inspector Matthews from the Port Stephens Command said they were generally well behaved with only a “few minor incidents”.

Kylie Irwin from Irwin’s Fuel and Food said the weekend was very similar to their Easter period which is their busiest time of the year.

“They came in droves to town,” Mrs Irwin said.

“There were heaps of people about and everyone was very well behaved.

“It was a really good weekend for the whole town, it brings in more money for us than the [Dungog] film festival.

“They were buying their Coke, chips, ice . . . from town, rather than bringing it with them.

“We sold out of diesel and premium fuel, it was that big a weekend.

“They are always very well behaved and well mannered when they come to our shop.”
