Is there anything bacon can’t do?
After 20 years shunning meat and all meat products, it was a simple sandwich that threw Jamie Hince off the vegan wagon and back into meat eating.
The Kills singer, 43, has revealed that dating Kate Moss, 38, was enough to change his morals – or at least put them into perspective.
“I was vegan for about 20 years,” Jamie told the London Evening Standard.
“But then… the thing that really tipped me over the edge was when I first met Kate, had just started seeing her, and I walked into the kitchen and she was in her underwear making me a bacon sandwich. She didn’t know I was vegan, and I was like… all my principles went out of the window.
“Or my priorities went right.”
The rocker married Moss in a $800,000 Cotswolds festival-style three-day celebration in June 2011, the bride wearing a vintage-style capped headdress and gown by friend and fashion designer John Galliano.
Hince’s band mate and erstwhile housemate, Allison Mosshart, was also vegan but admitted that she too is “not any more”.
The Moss effect goes beyond diet, however, and Hince said that his craft is partly shaped by his new wife, whom he met in 2. Moss has a daughter, nine-year-old Lila Grace, with Jefferson Hack and infamously dated troubled rocker Pete Doherty for years.
Speaking about her influence on his lyrics, he said: “What, Kate? Obviously. Important things inspire songs.” He also bemoaned the fame that is attached to the Kate Moss brand. “But it’s also a curse, because the best lyrics are when you really lay yourself on the line and make yourself vulnerable, and I find it really hard to do that now. Privacy has become the most precious thing. Things have got more cryptic in my writing.”
The rocker recently told British Esquire magazine’s September issue that is “disgusted” by how he looks when wearing trainers and that his ultimate style icon is Lucien Freud. He added that fashion shows make him feel “f—ing stupid” – something of an occupational hazard given his wife’s stellar fashion career.
In the Standard interview, the supermodel’s husband opened up about his many years spent squatting, living relatively rough in London because of no “trust fund or parents that could help out.”
It’s a long way off from the £7.5million ($11 million) pile Hince now shares with Moss in London’s exclusive Highgate.
